9th May J.M.Barrie (1860 - 1937) Harry Horse (1960 - 2007) Mothers Day

Sir James Matthew Barrie (J. M. Barrie) was the Scottish author who created Peter Pan, the boy who refused to grow up. He was born 150 years ago so there has been a resurgence of films and books based on Peter Pan. While the story is beyond the reading ability of my clientele there are many children who know the story because of plays, musicals and movies. Some of my parents have even serialised the story. The library has a beautiful version with illustrations by Shirley Hughes. This year Paul Hess has released a pop-up version which includes music. The children love this book. It does have all the magic of Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and Captain Hook with a larger than life presence. Also Geraldine McCaughrean has written a sequel to the story called Peter Pan in Scarlet. The illustrated version, done by David Wyatt of this book makes it very accessible to young children too. If you are looking for an Australian connection, Robert Ingpen has also done a version of Peter Pan and it looks as if it will be re-issued in August as a Centenary Edition.
