4th December Munro Leaf (1905 - 1976)

Wilnerd Monroe Leaf, known as Munro Leaf was the American author who wrote Story of Ferdinand, a lovely tale about a Spanish bull who prefers smelling flowers to bullfighting. It was illustrated by his friend Robert Lawson and published in 1936. Walt Disney made it into a film and it won an Academy Award in 1938. This book became controversial because people saw Ferdinand as a symbol of pacificism and therefore thought the book subversive. It was banned in Spain and burned as propoganda during WWII. Children still enjoy the story in 2010 so it is just as well it survived the controversy.
